Volunteer

Donating your time is just as valuable as donating money or food.  The Gathering Source is always looking for compassionate, reliable volunteers to join our team and make a difference in our communities!

Our Volunteer Onboarding Process:

  1. Fill out our volunteer application.
  2. We’ll have a short call to discuss your interests and availability.  This helps us find the perfect opportunity for you.
  3. We’ll give you the training you need and let you shadow the role first.
  4. You’ll be ready to volunteer!

Check out our current volunteer opportunities below.

Grant Writer

Assist the TGS Board President in writing grant applications for funds to support TGS outreach, operations, and facilities.  This could include up to 20 grant opportunities per year.  Responsibilities could include researching new grant opportunities and appropriate content (statistics, trends, etc.).  This position could be paid hourly or success fees depending on the quality of the candidate(s). Volunteer Coordinator

Maintain and periodically communicate monthly schedules of volunteers for weekly recurring responsibilities, including pantry food distribution, food delivery receiving, and food pickups (i.e, Grocery Rescue) as well as on an ad hoc basis for substitutions, other food picks/deliveries, and special projects.  There are currently approximately 40 registered volunteers available for one or more of the above-named tasks.  The schedule is maintained on a Google drive spreadsheet accessed by all volunteers. Food Pantry

Our food pantry is open Thursdays from 10:00am – 12:00pm and 5:00pm – 7:00pm.  As a pantry volunteer, you’ll get to work directly with our patrons as you welcome and check them in, assist as needed during shopping, restock product and keep the pantry tidy.  Time commitment is typically 2 ½ hours per shift.

Food Handler

Our weekly food order arrives between 7:30 am – 10:30 am on Wednesdays.  As a food handler, you will join other volunteers in unloading and stocking products from those orders.  You should be able to lift up to 20 lbs.  Time commitment is typically 2 hours per shift. Learn more: Volunteer Dodge

Food Pickup

We currently have weekly donations that require pick-up in Juneau and Columbus.  Food pick-up volunteers will pick up product donations and return/unload products at our facility.  You should be able to lift up to 20 lbs.  Time commitment is typically 1 hour per shift. Can’t commit weekly? Sign-up to be a backup. Learn more: Volunteer Dodge

Box Truck Driver

Driving our box truck doesn’t require a special license, just a clean driving record!  As a box truck driver, you would travel to pick up larger donations on behalf of The Gathering Source and return/unload product at our facility.  Time commitment is typically 2 hours per pick-up and is “as needed.”

Building & Grounds

As a building and grounds volunteer, you’ll be helping keep our building and grounds in the best condition possible.  This may include weeding, small repairs, window cleaning and/or other building and grounds needs.  Time commitment is flexible and can vary based on weather.

Culinary Guide

Culinary Guide: collect and/or create simple, easy to fix, recipes using some of the more unfamiliar fresh vegetables we are blessed with (radishes, leeks, swiss chard, turnip greens, etc.) as well as the familiar (green beans, tomatoes, various peppers, etc.) that we can offer our patrons when they come through the pantry.  We would also need to translate them into Spanish.  This could be done off sight.
